Deborah Tannen - author of "Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Men in the Workplace: Language, Sex and Power".

Why do I feel as if I have read something which disparages/rebuts her views?

Context? Have you just read the book and think that it is self-defeating? Perhaps your workplace experiences do not offer evidence to support the theories in the book? Perhaps you simply have read something that disparages her views previously and are only half-recollecting it.

I must admit, I've not read that one (Only "That's not what I meant!") so I'll have to pass.

What did you think of the book? MIL had her first one here. I read it and came away with the feeling that she had a theory and found data to fit it.

I haven't read the book, just an extract. We had a "women and leadership" seminar the other day, and the speaker referred to her work, and we got the extract as a hand-out. I read it this morning and to be honest, it strikes me as completely sexist. I had it in my head that her work was questioned, and wanted to know where I'd picked up the idea.

The one here was "You Just Don't Understand".
And I came to the same conclusion. But then I don't think I've ever had a problem communicating with (most) men.

Hmm, that's interesting. I've read "That's not what I meant!" and, to be honest, I thought quite a lot of the stuff in there made sense, particularly as regards some of the... interesting discussions... I've had with various people over the years...
