Gord enquires:
Long dead, you are awakened from your eternal slumber some of your descendants using a Ouija board. It's a little bit annoying, understandably, since you were having a nice sleep in the dark. But your descendants want to ask you something.

Straining to hear them, you make out the question, "Ancestor, ancestor, we live in a perilous age. We humans are capable of great good and also great evil. We need guidance, we need... we need maxims to guide us. Ancestor, wise ancestor, give us five aphorisms or mottos you think worthy of remembering throughout our lives, as we navigate the complexities and dangers of the human, and yes, the posthuman world!

I could start with, "Don't use Ouija boards, you never know what you might wake up...." but, somehow, I don't think that's quite what Gord intended.

So:

1. Sometimes, you get what you pay for. Sometimes, it is true, you don't. Occasionally, you will be ripped off and need to chalk that up to experience. But rest assured, should you try to "do it on the cheap," you'll be caught out.

2. You get what you give. The New Radicals may have put it into song, and now it's on my current internal endless loop, but it's a worthy motto anyway. You don't trust, you don't receive trust.

3. Them what don't ask, don't get. If you don't let others know what you want/need, the chances of it magically appearing in your lap are considerable reduced. Do remember though, that asking in and of itself does not in any way guarantee receipt.

4. Cast your bread upon the waters... Indeed. Try. Give. Take a chance. It's the only way you'll grow.

5. There are a whole load that might come in here: Don't take any wooden nickels. Don't eat the yellow snow. (I know it was Zappa, but for a Canadian, it's a good rule.) Trust no one. (I know it contradicts #2 above, but I thought Fox Mulder was cute.) Keep a weather-eye out. Most can be summed up by don't be an eejit.

And don't wake me up!!!
