Moving - or how not to get new furniture.
By Jo Russell

Firstly, my Dad and brother, Jeff, are pretty fantastic. They loaded far more than I would have thought possible into the Rig, and drove into town, and unloaded it all, and set up/placed what they could. They took me shopping for groceries and cleaning supplies and a new tv (and I can't get a single station until the cable is connected next Friday), and didn't get crabby with me when I got stressed.

Arrived in town. Went to Nfld Light & Power to present ID & prove I was indeed the person who said she'd be responsible for the bills at this address. Went to the bank to continue to drain my steadily-shrinking resources. Back to furniture shop to confirm delivery. First problem - both of the beds were out of stock. This is despite my advising I needed items that were in stock as they were going into an empty apartment, not replacing furniture that already existed. Bed 1 (mine) was in a container at the docks, awaiting delivery to the store. Bed 2 (guest room) wasn't going to be in for a week. I confirmed a bed was needed today, as promised, and they found a queen set of Bed 2's specs, which they offered to me for the same price as the double I'd ordered. OK, that'll do - I don't have any queen-sized bedding, but that can be dealt with. Deliveries are running late as one of the delivery company's vans lost its transmission this morning and the other is tied up on two house moves. They will telephone before coming, but it will be today. Salesman offers to do set up and assembly if my father has to leave before it arrives. (I had told them I needed everything confirmed for delivery for Thursday so Dad could do this for me - I'm not even attempting it.) *sigh* Well, hopefully, this will work out OK.

Do all other errands, unload things brought and things bought. Dad approves of apartment. Wait. Eventually get brother to telephone and ask about delivery status - they advise truck now being loaded. Half-hour later, get call advising that my sofa is not in the warehouse - "It's showing up on the computer, but..." Ask what they propose. They tell me will be in next week. Say unacceptable - will need to loan me a sofa until delivery of item ordered. They "don't do that". Insist. Salesman calls manager, who offers me a loveseat. Won't work - in view of lateness of delivery, Dad and Jeff will need to stay over in order to deal with still-awaited delivery (after 5 pm already) - only one bed being delivered. Need at very least a sofa that I can sleep on. Salesman back to manager - offers me loan of a sofa. Express dissatisfaction with missing item after delivery had been confirmed, but accept for now.

Delivery eventually arrives - usual surly deliverymen, one of whom denied transmission story I was fed earlier. They bring in available furniture, complain about stairs, query whether sofa ordered (a sectional) will fit, and finally bring everything up. Dad opens boxes containing chairs & immediately finds one with a broken back. Deliveryman agrees to call store, replacements to follow - time indefinite. Asks me to sign delivery note, which I do only after adding notes of problems and items outstanding.

Dad & Jeff start assembling furniture. Lamps work. Table goes together, and fits perfectly where I wanted it to go. But only 1 of 4 chairs can be assembled - one is broken, and it and the other two have the bolt holes incorrectly drilled. Jeff assembles coffee and end tables, one of which has two wonky legs. I am getting even more stressed.

Leave with Jeff to catch shop before closing to advise of multiple problems - being teeth-gritted-pissed-off, I direct Jeff incorrectly and we make it only about 3 minutes before closing. Fortunately, there are people there. Advise salesman of woes, lose temper only momentarily. He opens and checks entire stock of similar chairs - all have same mis-drilled holes. At a loss what to do - manager finally says I can borrow two chairs from display stock. Also get two more legs for wonky endtable. Leave, to promise of other bed delivered tomorrow.

Go get pizza. (HUGE pizza...) Chat. Dad & Jeff stretch out on bed, I attempt sleep on sofa. Not comfortable. Change direction I'm lying in three times overnight, and wake feeling battered and bruised, barely able to straighten up. Jeff leaves to do a little shopping, including some for me of things I forgot to get yesterday, while Dad crushes all the packaging and cardboard so they can take it away. Dad likes bed, and says he slept well. Jeff says that Dad kicks, snores and grunts "like a bull moose". When they left, I crawled into bed, but only got 30 minutes' sleep - been in & out for the rest of the day.

Needless to say, the other bed has not been delivered today. When I spoke to them at 3:30, they were still awaiting the container from the docks. It was delivered on Wednesday, but they couldn't accept delivery due to the high winds and heavy rain having flooded the loading dock. Oceanex is not not playing nice.

But I have managed to get online, using Dad's account's roaming number, and I had a good chat with Angie, whose birthday it is today, and sorted out the telephone package to minimise my phone bill. Oh, I also had two automated calls from a collection agency for some company that used to have my phone number, which is bloody annoying, but I called them and hopefully, they'll desist before I have to get really angry - I've about used up my quota for now!

There was a "Take Back the Night" march by the window a few minutes ago. There's been a few foghorns, and plenty of harbour traffic, including a huge white cruise ship, the something Princess. I'll settle, it's just a bit lonely right now.
