...they're doing a major review of "how things work" around here, and along with other oncoming changes, I've been approached to work as the enquiry manager for the entire practice. (ETA: "enquiries" are sometimes better known as investigations or audits.) Company tax and PAYE enquiries only, not personal tax. No more computations, returns or general compliance. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Seems too narrow a niche for me, somehow.

Admittedly, I would welcome some changes. I spend far too much time dealing with routine compliance matters because there is no one to whom I can delegate such work. And enquiries can certainly be interesting, but I am concerned about the work from the point of view that no one is ever happy going through an enquiry, (even when you win) and it is without doubt a stressful experience. And of course, it depends on how much I can make the work my own.

I need to talk to Graham (the semi-retired partner who's titular head of such matters here) about it, and he's just left for 2 weeks' holiday today.

I set up an iTunes music store account last Sunday, and am having a terrible time. There are simply too many choices. I don't know what to go for. So far, all I've bought are Martha Wainwright's new album, and "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil because, for some reason, it was floating around my head last weekend. I don't recall hearing it anywhere, so I don't know why it did that earworm thing.

So this evening, I browsed, reached no conclusion and ended up ripping a few Rolling Stones cds and one of Keith Richards' solo stuff to the iPod for the weekend. I've been a Stones fan forever - the cover of "Let it Bleed" is the first album cover I can remember as a child - it was my uncle's, and I think it was around the time he started university when I was 4 or 5, that I remember it from... yep, that's right for the year of release. When I first arrived in the UK, every trip to London had to include time in record shops in Soho and Camden, hunting out Stones rarities and bootlegs. But, all my vinyl stayed with the ex, so I don't have any of that anymore. Even so, some of the cds I pulled out this afternoon were unexpected surprises. Should be a good listen - I don't think I've listened to any of them since pre-1997.
