Total number of books owned?

Looking around here, I guess there's about 600 here, and another couple hundred upstairs. I left about 1000 behind when I left my ex - he promised I could have them back, but it never happened. There are a couple hundred of mine at H's place, and another 4-500 at my parents' place. Plus, there are many I have loaned out, never to be returned, or simply gave away...

The last book I bought?

I have several on order, awaiting delivery, including this. Most recent acquisitions are (I think) Stephen Donaldson's _The Runes of The Earth: The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant_ and three books about Macs, including _Macintosh Switcher's Guide_ by Robert Standefer. I'm trying to come to grips...

The last book I read?

_Judas Child_ by Carol O'Connell. Re-read this weekend because I wasn't up to concentrating on something new.

5 books that mean a lot to me

I'm not sure how to answer that! So many books have, one way or another. Sometimes it wasn't even just the books, but the people they led me to meet, as was the case with Poppy Z Brite's first two books, or Iain (M) Banks' work. So, books that had some other impact:

Neil Peart's _Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road_ for the insight into someone else's pain, someone who I've listened to play for over 25 years, and to get a feel for them as a person, not as a musician or performer.

Ayn Rand's _The Fountainhead_ and _Atlas Shrugged_ which I may have been led to as a result of hours with Rush's LP covers and lyrics. I love the books, if not the politics, and pick them up still on visits home. Bits of ephemera always fall out of them.

_Boon Island_ by Kenneth Roberts. It was my grandfather's. and this story of shipwreck was one I curled up with in bed at their house many a night. I feel as if it made me appreciate the warmth and cosiness there far more than I might have otherwise, and stayed in my head, for some reason. There are other books I asssociate with the security there.

Barbara Grigg's _The Green Witch: A Modern Woman's Herbal_ for the many times it's been such a useful reference.
